What is recycled yarn?
We source old cones of knitting machine yarn from people's attics! They are usually sitting there unwanted and unloved- and would end up in the bin. When we started we looked for them on places like ebay and freecycle, but now we get a lot of donations too. Some of the yarn is in pretty bad shape- or so it looks! They go through a cleaning/cleansing process and then it's time to make it suitable for handknitting. We use an electric ball winder (which makes them into the ready-to-knit cakes) and a lot of experience to pair up different cones that have certain textures and thicknesses that work together (colour too!).

Every recycled yarn cake will be made up of multiple strands (unless specified), as coned yarn is usually super thin. You use all strands held together, just like if you were holding two strands of sock yarn to get a DK weight. It's all wound up for you though, so you don't have lots of balls getting tangled- this stuff is ready to go!

Fibre content: Theres really no telling what the actual fibre is- most of the cones do not come with labels! We've had cotton, wool, acrylic, plant based and mystery fibres! Mostly the yarn knits up like a mix of wool/acrylic and cotton. It usually does not have that natural woolly 'bounce' and stretch that you would expect with something of a high wool content. Please read the colourway description for any special fibre notes.

If you're curious about the process of how we make this yarn, theres a story highlight on our instagram @aushopuk :)
