Learning how to knit socks with Kim Smith @kimsmithhappy (Owner of AU)
Duration: 3 Hours (at least!) We recommend starting early in the day and taking lots of tea breaks!
Max 4 people per session.
NOTE: This is a class that is taking place IN STORE (Cleeve, near Bristol, UK). Please be sure you can attend in person before purchasing.
A great way to learn how to make socks is to make a tiny one! It's exactly the same as a regular sock but with fewer stitches so we can go through all phases, Rib, Leg, Heel, Foot and Toe in one sitting. Plus we make it in chunky so you can really see those stitches and it wont be too tiny!
Please be confident in your Knit and Purl stitches, as socks can be a bit tricky! (You're going to be learning quite a lot of new techniques; working in the round, decreasing, short rows, picking up stitches, kitchener stitch). I say this is an Easy/Skilled level because you don't have to have made a lot of things to make a sock, but the more experience you have, the easier it is.
We will go over different types of needles for sock knitting (circular, 9inch, double pointed, trios etc) as well tips on choosing the right wool for strong socks (it's not all about nylon!). We will touch on different types of heels and toes and also discuss how to get matching socks with self striping yarn. It's quite a full day, and you are more than welcome to stay until closing time (5pm) so you can finish up or chat.
WHAT YOU NEED:
This is an easy/intermediate class, you'll need to know your Knit and Purl stitch real good, as you'll be learning lots of new things. Price includes 50g of chunky wool and needles to borrow during the day. Buy your needles for £4 - £10. We can also help you pick out needles and yarn to start a pair of 'real' socks when you get home.
